Indianapolis, IN - WIndiana was launched in 2008 by the Indiana Office of Energy Development and the Indiana Wind Working Group. The wind industry in Indiana was just getting up to speed at the time; there was one wind farm and very little wind industry manufacturing in the state. There were 300 people and 15 exhibitors that first year. WIndiana continued to grow in 2009 and 2010 both in attendance and in the size of the exhibition floor.
As we entered our fourth year, there was a larger world of renewable energy to explore in Indiana. With feed-in tariffs, and a number of new manufacturing initiatives it was decided that we could no longer just focus on wind power. So in 2011 WIndiana includes the Indiana Renewable Energy Conference (IREC), with a focus on a variety of renewable energy technologies, including wind, solar, bioenergy and alternative fuel vehicles.
WIndiana and IREC are not just about talk, either. This year we have included hands-on, how-to workshops on Solar PV, Solar Thermal, small wind, geothermal and a variety of other cutting edge renewable technologies. This year WIndiana is more accessible to all Hoosiers who are interested in including renewable and alternative energy technologies in their lives, at home and in business.
Highlights include 24 sessions on Large Scale Wind, Solar, Biomass and Alternative Fuel Vehicles; five How-To Workshops for Home and Small Business on Small Wind, Solar PV, Solar Thermal, Geothermal; Continuing Education Session for K-12 Teachers; and three Tours of Wind, Solar, and Biomass sites. Keynote speakers include:
- Ed Begley, Jr., Actor, Environmentalist
- Becky Skillman, Indiana Lt. Governor
- Denise Bode, CEO AWEA
- Bob Prantil, Region Exec, GE Energy
